Laser ranging sensor

Definition: laser ranging sensor

A Laser Ranging Sensor is a ground-based sensor system that measures the distance to an object by timing the interval between the transmission of a laser pulse and the detection of the reflected pulse.

This type of sensor is used extensively in space surveillance and tracking because of its ability to precisely calculate distances to objects in orbit, such as satellites and debris.

The sensor emits short pulses of laser light, which travel to the object and back to the sensor when reflected. By precisely measuring the time it takes for the light to return, the distance to the object can be accurately calculated using the speed of light as a reference.

Laser Ranging Sensors are critical for orbital object tracking, collision avoidance, and maintaining an accurate catalog of space objects, which are all essential for space situational awareness and traffic management. They are integrated with other sensors and systems to enhance the overall accuracy and reliability of data pertaining to objects in orbit.

Benefits for orbit determination and collision avoidance

Laser ranging sensors provide highly precise distance measurements that tighten orbit determination and reduce uncertainty in predicted conjunctions. This improves collision avoidance decision-making, supports safe maneuver planning, and increases the reliability of space object catalogues used for space situational awareness and traffic management.

When combined with other sensor types, ranging helps resolve ambiguous tracks, refine object identification, and maintain consistent custody of satellites and debris over time.

Look Up’s SYNAPSE platform and complementary SORASYS radar coverage

Look Up uses the SYNAPSE digital platform to fuse multi-source tracking data and deliver actionable space safety analytics, including collision avoidance predictions with a 99.9% accuracy rate. SYNAPSE helps operators integrate those measurements with other observations to strengthen orbit estimates, issue timely alerts, and coordinate risk mitigation.

In LEO, SORASYS radars complement optical and ranging data by detecting and tracking objects other solutions miss, improving catalogue completeness for safer fleet and constellation operations.

We are not just another space safety company

We deliver space situational awareness (SSA) and space domain awareness (SDA) solutions that help secure active satellites and ensure safe operations in the ever-growing expanse of space.
